Kapal Selam Perang Malaysia tidak Bisa Menyelam

KUALA LUMPUR, KOMPAS.com - Nurul Izzah (30), putri tokoh oposisi Anwar Ibrahim, dituduh berkhianat akibat wawancara yang dimuat di harian Kompas (5/8). Komentar Nurul tentang kapal selam bermasalah yang dibeli Malaysia dari Perancis jadi dasar dakwaan membahayakan keselamatan negara.
Nurul menjawab tuduhan serius itu dalam situs www.freemalaysiatoday.com (FMT). Sementara pihak Angkatan Laut Diraja Malaysia melaporkan Nurul ke Balai Polis Hulu Kelang tanggal 17 Agustus lalu.
Hasil wawancara dengan harian Kompas yang dijadikan dasar tuntutan militer terhadap Nurul adalah keterangan ”...kapal selam itu tidak bisa menyelam dan persenjataan yang dibeli ternyata sudah kedaluwarsa.”
Oleh sebagian media pro-pemerintah, Nurul pun dicap sebagai pengkhianat nomor satu karena menceritakan kondisi kapal selam Kapal Diraja Tunku Abdurahman yang tak dapat menyelam dan persenjataannya sudah kedaluwarsa.
Dalam jawaban di situs FMT, Nurul menjelaskan, keterangan kepada harian Kompas berdasarkan jawaban yang disampaikan Menteri Pertahanan Malaysia di Dewan Rakyat (parlemen Malaysia) pada 17 Maret 2010 tentang kapal selam tak bisa menyelam.
Sebelum Angkatan Laut Diraja Malaysia mengadukan Nurul ke Polisi Diraja Malaysia, Menteri Pertahanan Ahmad Zahid Hamidi menilai komentar Nurul sudah mencederai citra Malaysia dan membahayakan negara.
Dituduh demikian, Nurul menjawab tudingan pengkhianat bangsa lebih tepat diarahkan kepada pihak yang membiarkan korupsi merajalela di sektor pertahanan. ”Jika Menteri Ahmad Zahid adalah patriot, kenapa tak mendukung Komisi Anti-Korupsi Malaysia untuk menyelidiki pemberian komisi kepada perusahaan Perimekar Sdn Bhd dari perusahaan Perancis dalam pembelian kapal selam itu yang ditanyakan parlemen tanggal 2 Juli 2010,” kata Nurul.
Kasus korupsi sebesar 114 juta euro (Rp 1,2 triliun lebih) itu tengah disidangkan di Perancis. Perimekar Sdn Bhd adalah perusahaan milik Abdul Razak Baginda, seorang rekan dekat Perdana Menteri Najib Razak.
Nurul menambahkan, seperti diberitakan Bernama (6/8), latihan Angkatan Laut yang dilakukan setahun sekali di Malaysia demi penghematan dari semestinya tiga kali justru lebih membahayakan keselamatan dan keamanan negara.

Bumi Diserang Sinar Kosmik Bintang Mati

Sinar kosmik dengan pola aneh tak beraturan membombardir Bumi dari luar angkasa. Fenomena ini ditangkap oleh eksperimen IceCube Neutrino Observatory yang dibangun jauh di dasar lapisan es Antartika.

 

Sinar kosmik merupakan partikel energi tinggi di angkasa luar yang diduga berasal dari sisa-sisa bintang mati. Namun, IceCube mendeteksi bahwa partikel-partikel itu tiba bukan dalam kondisi "seragam" dari semua arah.

Seperti dilansir Livescience.com, edisi 30 Juli 2010, studi menunjukkan bahwa sinar kosmik berlebih datang dari satu bagian di langit, dan sinar kosmik yang kurang kadarnya datang dari bagian lain.

"IceCube sebenarnya bukan dibangun untuk mengamati sinar kosmik. Sinar kosmik hanya dianggap latar belakang saja," kata peneliti dari University of Wisconsin-Madison, Rasha Abbasi.

Studi-studi sebelumnya telah menemukan adanya kemiripan kemiringan (yang disebut anisotropy) di langit di atas Kutub Utara Bumi. Namun, baru kali ini ilmuwan melihat pola-pola aneh tersebut di langit benua paling ujung selatan planet Bumi.

"Namun, kami punya miliaran event mengenai sinar kosmik yang kemudian menjadi sangat menarik," tambahnya.

Abbasi mengatakan, salah satu penjelasan untuk mengungkap misteri sinar kosmik ini adalah bahwa sebuah bintang kemungkinan mati dalam ledakan supernova di yang relatif dekat dengan (Kutub Selatan), dan sisa-sisa ledakan itu mungkin bercampur membentuk sinar kosmik yang mendominasi sinyal-sinyal yang diterima oleh IceCube.

"Pada awalnya, kami tidak tahu apa yang harus kami harapkan," kata Abbasi. "Melihat anisotropy ini meluas ke langit Kutub Selatan merupakan hasil tambahan dari efek-efek misterius, entah itu karena daerah magnetis yang mengelilingi kami atau karena sisa-sisa ledakan supernova di sekitar sini," terang Abbasi.

Apakah misteri tersebut bisa diungkap atau tidak, observasi ini bisa membantu ilmuwan untuk lebih memahami sinar kosmik yang terbentuk. Penemuan oleh IceCube mengenai sinar kosmik ini dijelaskan secara detail dalam jurnal Astrophysical Journal Letters edisi 1 Agustus 2010.

Ship lost for more than 150 years is recovered

TORONTO – Canadian archeologists have found a ship abandoned more than 150 years ago in the quest for the fabled Northwest Passage and which was lost in the search for the doomed expedition of Sir John Franklin, the head of the team said Wednesday.

Marc-Andre Bernier, Parks Canada's head of underwater archaeology, said the HMS Investigator, abandoned in the ice in 1853, was found in shallow water in Mercy Bay along the northern coast of Banks Island in Canada's western Arctic.

"The ship is standing upright in very good condition. It's standing in about 11 meters (36 feet) of water," he said. "This is definitely of the utmost importance. This is the ship that sailed the last leg of the Northwest Passage."

The Investigator was one of many American and British ships sent out to search for the HMS Erebus and the Terror, vessels commanded by Franklin in his ill-fated search for the Northwest Passage in 1845.

Environment Minister Jim Prentice said the British government has been notified that one of their naval shipwrecks has been discovered, as well as the bodies of three sailors.

Captained by Robert McClure, the Investigator sailed in 1850. That year, McClure sailed the Investigator into the strait that now bears his name and realized that he was in the final leg of the Northwest Passage, the sea route across North America.

But before he could sail into the Beaufort Sea, the ship was blocked by pack ice and forced to winter-over in Prince of Wales Strait along the east coast of Banks Island.

The following summer, McClure tried again to sail to the end of the Passage, but was again blocked by ice. He steered the ship and crew into a large bay on the island's north coast he called the Bay of Mercy.

There they were to remain until 1853, when they were rescued by the crew of the HMS Resolute. The Investigator was abandoned.

"This is actually a human history," said Bernier. "Not only a history of the Passage, but the history of a crew of 60 men who had to overwinter three times in the Arctic not knowing if they were going to survive."

The Parks Canada team arrived at Mercy Bay on July 22. Three days later, the ice on the bay cleared enough that researchers were able to deploy side-scanning sonar from a small inflatable boat over the site where they believed the wooden ship had eventually sunk. Within 15 minutes, the Investigator was found.

"The ship had not moved too much from where it was abandoned," said Bernier.

The masts and rigging have long been sheared off by ice and weather. But the icy waters of the McClure Strait has preserved the vessel in remarkably good condition.

"It's incredible," said Prentice from Mercy Bay. "You're actually able to peer down into the water and see not only the outline of the ship but actually the individual timbers.

Archaeologists have also uncovered artifacts on land left behind by the stranded sailors, who unloaded everything before abandoning the Investigator.

The graves of three sailors thought to have died of scurvy have been marked off and will be left undisturbed, said Bernier.

Bernier said the next step will be to send down a remote controlled video camera to get actual pictures of the wreck. There are no plans to bring it to the surface and all legal steps will be taken to ensure the site remains protected.

Bernier also said the team will use similar technology to find the Erebus and Terror.

Security pro harvests info on 100 million Facebook users

How easy would it be to compile a list of, say, 20 percent of Facebook's user base, including their full name, unique user ID and URL of their Facebook page? Awfully easy, it turns out.

Computer security consultant Ron Bowes did exactly that, BBC News reports. He snagged a full 100 million users in his research, all through the power of searching for what is freely available online.

Bowes was quick to note that the file he compiled did not include email addresses, phone numbers or other restricted information, and that everything added to the file was publicly available and in keeping with each user’s privacy settings on Facebook. The file does not represent an attack on Facebook nor a compromising of its security measures: Bowes simply scraped up the information about individual accounts that anyone could have uncovered, and he crammed it into one gargantuan document.

The file is spreading across the Internet rapidly, and it will probably be used much in the way a spammer’s e-mail database is used: to target the unsuspecting with phony friend requests, to send en masse invitations to spam-filled groups, and to coerce them into clicking on phishing links and other malicious URLs.
